Castor Oil Packing

What is it?
Castor oil packing is a naturopathic technique used throughout the ages. It is the application of castor oil externally to areas of inflammation, congestion or poor function.

Why?
Castor oil packing improves assimilation, elimination and circulation throughout the body. It is particularly valuable for boosting liver function as a means of improving routes of elimination thus reducing inflammation throughout the body.
There are many conditions that can benefit form castor oil packing and it is particularly useful for conditions resulting form congestion of the lymphatic system such as inflammation, skin disorders, liver and gall bladder disturbances, constipation, headaches, lumpy painful breasts, arthritis, hernias, kidney problems, PMS, varicose veins and many others.

How?

1. Take a sheet of natural woollen on cotton flannel more than large enough to cover the area to be treated and lay it on a flat wipe able surface.
2. Drizzle castor oil which may be gently warmed first if desired, onto the centre of the fabric, then fold the fabric in half and gently press or squeeze it to distribute the oil
3. Apply the oiled fabric to the area to be treated. It is recommended that when packing other parts of the body, that the liver is treated simultaneously or soon afterwards.
4. Wrap the pack in Clingfilm or some other type of plastic to prevent the oil leaking out onto clothing and to hold the pack securely in place. A castor oil pack holder is recommended

5. Apply a heat pad or hot water bottle to the pack and cover with several layers of towels or warm clothing to keep the heat in.
6. Lie down and relax for 1 ½ to 2 hours. The pack can be worn overnight.
7. After removing the pack, surplus oil can be massages into the body or washed off.

For best results apply a castor oil pack in the area being treated on 3 or 4 consecutive days each week for 3 weeks. Have a week’s break and then repeat for another 3 weeks and so until the condition improves (or as directed by your practitioner)

NB Castor oil pack holders are available to make castor oil packing easier and less messy than the cling film method. Please ask for details.
